By bus to Toulouse

Of course you can use your car for your day trip to Toulouse. But, like with any trip to a large city, you will have to wait several times for the traffic lights, maybe even have delays because of traffic jams, and have a lot of trouble finding a parking place and remembering how to find back your car.

An excellent alternative is the bus numer 65 of Arc-en-Ciel, gonig from Boulogne-Sur-Gesse, via Lombez, to Toulouse (and back, of course). Unfortunately it doesn't have a busstop in front of the Parc yet, but there is one next to the Mairie (townhall). The bus takes a very pleasant route through several nice little villages and with good views to the beautiful countryside. After almost one and a half hour you arrive at the main bus station of Toulouse, which is next to the railwaystation Matabieu. From there it is a few minutes walking to the city centre, or you can rent a bike at the railway station. (see page Cycling). If you expect to make this trip several times, or with more than one person, you can buy in the bus a "carnet", which contains six one-way tickets for the price of approx. four single ones. They are valid for several months.

You can find departure times in the online timetable (slight changes twice a year).

Shopping hours

Most shops open 9h00 - 12h30 and 14h30 - 19h30.

On Saturday, most of the smaller shops close early (not the big supermarket, the Intermarché).

On Sunday some shops in the main street are open in the morning, e.g. the bakery Pellis and the Tabac.

Several shops in Lombez en Samatan are closed on Tuesday; Bakery Pellis is the exception, he closes on Wednesday.

One of the novelties that started in the 2001 summer season was the arrival of bakery Pellis on the Parc. Each morning at 8:30h you can buy your fresh bread in front of the Château.

Golf

The climate near Lombez is ideal for playing golf. There are several golf clubs at a reasonable distance, where you can play almost any day. Only after heavy rain the fields can get too muddy to be used.

We have our own golf course next to the Parc, see our web page Golf du Château de Barbet

What do we know about the  Gers? (MK)

Personally, I know very little:

  • it is one of the many departements of France

  • the region has profited a lot because of the European subsidies for agriculture

  • there is a very crime rate

  • local products are a.o. foie gras, armagnac and haricots blancs de Tarbes

  • and uh... that's about all I konw, plus of course that it is the location of our beautiful Parc.

To improve my knowledge I have spend 2 Euro and 80 ce3nts in the local Tabac to acquire the booklet:  'Le Gers en 600 questions', written by Sylvie Minniotte.

The 600 questions and answers cover six themes:

  • famous people

  • famous cities and villages

  • history

  • the twentieth century
     art and literature

  • traditions

The answers are published, upside down, next to the questions. Six questions per page, with an extra piece of text at the bottom of the page.

Tw examples:

Question: What was the original name given, on January 28 1790, to the Gers?

Answer: It was named Armagnac, but soon after that the departement was renamed after the Gers, the river that flows from South to North through the capital Auch.

Question: Which pope promoted on July 11 1317 the priest of the small village Lombez to become a bishop?

Answer: Pope John XXII. The first bishop of Lombez was Arnaud-Roger, son of the count de Commingues. He was only 27 years old then.

And the book has 598 more ......top
