The favourite address in Lombez of ....

Jan Goedhart - the wine shop

Cave du TrianonThe wine shop (Cave du Trianon) is one of my favourite shops in Lombez. Not only do they sell excellent bottles of wine, you can also buy several red and white wines by the liter. We generally buy the red  Merlot, for 1.38 Euro per liter. We bring our own 5-liter containers, you could also use the large, plastic water or coke bottles. You can ask for a (free of charge) little tap (Roubinet) for your wine container. Our preference is to put the wine in old wine bottles as soon as possible. You can taste before you buy (goûter, déguster), but I was given a very large glass, which was re-filled for every sample .... and it was still before lunchtime ... Maybe a good idea to bting your own, small, glass. They also sell a very nice white (sweet) apéritive (Rivesaltes), a bit more expensive than the wine.

Arthur Weber - supermarket Intermarché

Of course you can buy in the Intermarché (on the top left picture, taken on one of the few rainy days), the largest of the two supermarkets in Lombez, a wide range of French products, many from the nearby region. The packages often have the list of ingredients and instructions in several languages, including English. In case you want on occasion to prepare your usual English, Dutch or Belgium meals, you will find that they also import many products from the surrounding countries.  The pictures show several examples of English products, Dutch cheese, and, in case the Cave du Trianon was not enough, a large selection of alcoholic beverages. Apart from your usual choices, we recommend to try the regional products Armagnac and Floc du Gascogne. In case of doubt, you can try these drinks at the market in Samatan! But beware, the Armagnac is a very strong drink, if you have to drive your car back, don't take too much!

Janet Goedhart - beauty parlour

is the beauty-parlour of Nathalie Baron-Toaldo in the center of Lombez, on the left side of the small CA bank office.

I visit her at least once every time I am in Lombez, she can always make a booking at short notice.
Nathalie is very nice, takes much time per customer and works very thorough.

Apart from that, it is also cheaper than back home: Depilate upper lip is 5,50 Euro, depilate upper lip and lower legs makes a total of 17,70.

The price list in the picture shows a few of the tariffs.

Despite the small size of the shop there are all sorts of products for sale, and hidden behind curtains are two little treatment rooms.

In this picture I am paying for an excellent treatment.

My recommendations!

Volken de Jong - Market in Samatan

The market, every Monday morning in Samatan (two kilometer from Lombez), is always very pleasant. Lots of products are for sale: vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, milk, meat, wine, Armagnac, curlery, pots and pans, clothing, small animals, etc. etc. From all over the region people come to this market to sell and / or buy, but also to meet each other. Afterwards there are several opportunities to drink a petit cafe or the enjoy lunch.

Now that the cycle path is ready you easily get to the market by cycling or walking.

Some impressions in the pictures.

Arthur Weber - wineshop Cave du Trianon

(a second nomination for Cave du Trianon in Lombez, this time from Arthur Weber)

For 11 years already Cave du Trianon has been managed by Marie-Pierre Ribes, you can easily find the cave, on your way to the Parc, on your right side in  Lombez.

(picture left: our receptionist Rita (left) next to Marie-Pierre Ribes, in front of the Cave)

Many customers from the Château preceeded you to the Cave, just to have an empty water bottle or 5 liter jerrycan filled with one of the wines for daily use.

She fills the bottles from a big cask, the most popular in our Parc are the Merlot (€ 1,40), the Sauvignon (€ 1,62) and the Cabernet (€ 1,40),
Clearly, a reasonable price for a good wine, although we advice to drink it in time.
Other wines for sale are the Vignon de Pays d’Oc, from the Gallac, des Côtes de Gascogne and Côtes de Saint Mont.
Also availabel other regional products like Canards Locale, Fromage du Lot and Confitures Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
You can pay at Bij Marie-Pierre's with credit- and visa card, her phone number is 0562623206 and the shop is open Lundi, Mardi, Jeudi, Vendredi 9.00 until 19.15,  Mercredi 9.00 till 12.30 and Samedi 9.00 till 16.00.
Dimanche Fermeture.

Miep Keijzer - the Tabac

It is hard to make a choice between all the smaller and bigger enterprises of Lombez!

I like to visit:

  • the Intermarché, for its large selection of food and non-food products
  • the smaller grocery in the village, because of their friendly and excellent serviced
  • the cycle shop (also motor cycles and garden equipment) which maintains my bike
  • the bakery shop(s), where you can buy excellent fresh bread, but also beautiful cakes, packaged like birthday presents

Of the non-commercial addresses I like:

  • the pétangue field next to the mairie, where you can watch a serious game each afternoon
  • the bus stop, on the other side of the mairie, where I wait for the bus to Touloused

But my most favourite address is the Tabac (stationary shop). For a small village like Lombez it is amazing  what range of magazines, books, news papers, cards, stationary and toys they can carry. And, for each of us wanting to know what happens in the rest of the world: they carry several international papers, including Dutch and English. Normally only one day later than in the originating country. But you have to be their early: there are more potential buyers!

Odette de Koning - Le Petit Bazar

Our address is Le Petit Bazar, you find it a little way behind the Intermarché, in a kind of warehouses.

The shop sells a lot of different things. Especially our kids like to go there, they sell all sorts of nice-to-have things, little presents and handy implements for in the house.

The owner / salesperson is very kind.

The shop opens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 19:00 hours.

Next to the shop is a crêperie, annex ice-parlour in Mexican style.

Jan Goedhart - restaurant Le Relais du Château in Saint Blancard

This restaurant is located near Boulogne, just past the village Lunax. you find it in the center of the flower-rich village opposite the catle. It is managed by Dutchmen, the family Meijer.

Normally thy have a jazz evening every first Friday of the month (see poster). It is recommended to reserve in advance.

Among the guests you will find not only French, but also Dutch and English people.

We have been in this restaurant for dinner and lunch, and ech time it was very good.

This story is about the second time we enjoyed a Jazz evening with dinner, Friday 3 June 2005.

Janet ordered the Menu Chevalier, with Salade Epinards and Escalope de Veau. It was delicious, and the maximum of 300 words isn't enough to describe it. As a dessert the fondant au chocolat,  a treat for chocolate fans.

For myself I ordered the Menu Mousquetaire, with the Salade Gasconne with Gésiers; the best I ever tasted! As a main dish the tournedos with marsala (a Sicilian dessert wine). Very worthwile! As dessert I took  Crepe Gasconne with fruit in Armagnac and icecream... do I need to say more?

We had a guest at our table, she ordered  à la carte, a (large) Salade Epinards, and the Gambas. This again was excellent, the high point of her vacation, as she said. The Cafe le Relais she took as dessert  was luxurious and very nice.

The service was fast, we didn't have to wait for breaks in the musical proceedings, which was the case last year.

Altogether this dinner was a big success, pleasantly decorated by the jazzy sounds of the artists.

Jan Goedhart - Market in l'Isle-Jourdain

A pleasant market is held each Saturday morning in l'Isle-Jourdain.

You can combine your visit to the market with a visit to the famous museum of clocks in the same village.
